Can a story have just visuals, just interviews, or both?

What I think this piece does well, is makes use of both storytelling through natural sound and visuals, very similar to our Story Without Words assignment, but also shows an effective use of the aesthetics of the A-roll to help drive the narrative arc.

Take, for example, the first two minutes of his piece. We never hear any of the protagonists directly speak to us, but from what we can see and hear, we know we’re in some kind of war situation. We don’t know exactly what war, but we do know we’re in a war. Later, two and a half minutes into the piece, the videographers incorporate interviews, conducted as the characters are still in costume. The first interview we see if a soldier smoking a cigarette, sitting in the woods. The form of this interview is casual, and adds to the piece because it keeps the viewer in the scene.

What this piece also does exceptionally well is incorporates use of hand-held footage. By having this kind of motion in the frame, we feel like we’re in the scene with the soldiers. Sometimes, when the video is too perfect, there’s a level of separation between the viewers and the scenes in the film.

This tactic, known as Mise en Scéne, is derived from film production and means putting the viewer in the scene. Through use of camera technique, aesthetics, props, etc… a filmmaker can remove any level of separation from the screen, and place the viewers in the film itself.

By using handheld footage, the videographers are allowing viewers to experience what it’s like to trek through the woods during situations like these.
